तेजो यत्ते रूपं कल्याणतमं तत्ते पश्यामि योऽसावसौ पुरुषः सोऽहमस्मि

The light which is your most benevolent form, I see it. The supreme being who that is, I am that.

What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient philosophy that is centered around finding our true selves and realizing our oneness with the universe. It prepares us for meditation towards that oneness, through control of our body and mind. It is common to conflate Yoga with one of its components, the physical practice of Asanas, but Yoga is much more than that as it touches every aspect of our life that way we live it. You can check Resources & Writings to learn more about the philosophy of Yoga.

Why practice Yoga?

Yoga provides us the clarity we need to live our life with meaning and purpose — ridding us of distractions through equanimity and bringing our focus back to what really matters. The message of Yoga is universal and its relevance is timeless as it guides us to become our best selves, tapping into the power within.

How to get started?

Yoga is a holistic practice that is rooted in awareness. The very first step in that awareness is recognizing the distinction between our consciousness and the material world as we elevate our body, mind and spirit in quest of a higher goal. We do this through our personal practices, our interactions with the world, control over our body and breathing, and ultimately through meditation. We do not need to follow any strict order, but we need to keep striving to follow the path as outlined by the eight limbs of Yoga:

  • Yama and Niyama: Behavioral practice of restraint (truth, non-violence, non-acquisition, non-appropriation, moderation) and discipline (cleanliness, contentment, perseverance, self-study, contemplation of a higher force).
  • Asanas and Pranayama: Physical practice involving poses and control of the life force that is breathing.
  • Pratyahara and Dharana: Mental practice through withdrawal from external pulls and a steadfast focus.
  • Dhyana and Samadhi: The final stage of meditation and realization of our oneness with the universe.

About

Soham Yoga is a platform for Yoga resources that grew out of our desire to give back to the community what we have personally experienced through many years of practice - the holistic healing effects of Yoga on our lives. We view Yoga as a transformative journey for an individual as it not only clarifies our understanding of 'self' but also changes how we interact with the world, thus creating a much larger impact. At Soham Yoga, we are parents, care givers and professionals that are only too familiar with the stresses that afflict us all today, at work and at home. That is why for us Yoga is not just a personal pursuit, it is a commitment to society at large.

We hope this portal can be of help to anyone seeking guidance in practicing Yoga, and that it will expand and grow with support from the community.

Sravasti Nair

After working in technology in Silicon Valley for nearly three decades, I decided to take a career break to devote time to reading, writing, supporting my children as they navigate adulthood, and pursuing Yoga. I hope to spread the message of this ancient philosophy to the broader community in an attempt to bring about meaningful changes in our lives.
